Shot by Steven Meisel | Makeup by Pat McGrath
Since its inception in 1964, the Pirelli calendar has been the gold standard of pinup calendars. No longer the province of ropey topless chicks straddling a motorcycle in dusty garages, it’s shot by one of the world’s best photographer every year, and uses the most beautiful models in the world. The final calendar is sent to a tiny handful of Pirelli’s best customers and VIP clients. It has always been kept under wraps and been the province of a very small, very select group of people.
But now, with the advent of the internet, it’s not so secretive anymore. Here is a 30 minute documentary on the making of this year’s Pirelli calendar, shot by arguably the most influential fashion photographer of our time, Steven Meisel. And the makeup in the calendar (‘cause let’s face it, this is MakeupMole, which is ALL ABOUT THE MAKEUP, even when there’s naked supermodels involved) is Pat McGrath’s usual perfection. If you ever wanted to see Joan Smalls as a latex boxer Belle de Jour fantasy fetish girl, now is your chance!
It couldn’t really be more Burberry if it tried – Kate and Cara sitting on a giant perfume bottle, in classic Burberry trench coats. Despite not being able to appreciate the perfume one iota (due to scrambled olfactory senses after the birth of my son – my sense of smell has never gone back to normal, such a bummer), I can still appreciate two British supermodels being gorgeous as it rains perfume. Sigh. If only life were like that.
In fact stuff the supermodels and the perfumed rain, I’d settle for one of those Burberry trench coats.
Sorry for the lack of posts last week but it’s been school holidays and I’ve been looking after my son. I don’t post about it much as it’s not beauty related – in fact it’s the opposite. Peanut butter sandwiches! Amusement and water parks! Picnics with mums and bands of children! So sometimes my beauty radar is a little – well let’s just say focused on other things.
However this great video from Style.com last week caught my eye as it’s fabulous footage of Linda Evangelista being all gorgeous and supermodel-y back in the day. And really, no one works it like La Evangelista.
I was thrilled to hear this week that Lara Stone, one of my favourite models, has been signed by L’Oreal. Following in the footsteps of Claudia Schiffer, Milla Jovovich and Laetitia Casta (along with a bevy of celebrities), Ms Stone with her fabulous gap toothed smile and one of the coolest editorial modelling careers on the planet is perfect to give an edge to the venerable French beauty house. Here’s her first video for the brand.
Behind the scenes on Mario Sorrenti’s shoot Le Sauvage for the June/July Paris Vogue 2013 issue
This is pretty much the ideal summer video. Shot in St Barth’s with uber mannequins Anja Rubik and Andreea Diaconu, one of my favourite makeup artists, Aaron de Mey providing the all-over tan, James Pecis, an MM fave, on the undone hair and photographer Mario Sorrenti creating ultimate beach babe looks. I love the 80’s ELLE-ness of it, it’s just gorge.
And with complementary ear-worm too – I can’t get this song out of my head.
*which for the uninitiated stands for Really Not Safe For Work, But Gorgeous
